This program is a collection of related research projects that focus on closed captioning of live content. We have brought it under one umbrella so that this site can act as a centralized repository of information relating to these initiatives.
The primary objectives of this program are to improve the quality of live captioning in Canada. This is done through the three different lenses which research in live captioning is currently being undertaken:
- Understanding User Responses to Closed Captioning of Live Television Programs in Canada - completed in Decemebr 2018
- Understanding User Experiences of Play-by-Play Captioning in Fast-Paced Live Sports - scheduled for completion in November 2021
- Understanding User Perspectives of the Speed/Accuracy/Delay Tradeoff for Captioning Fast-Paced Media Content: Towards Improved Quality Standards for Closed Captioning in Canada - to be completed by March 2023
The first two projects listed above have been funded by the Broadcasting Accessibility Fund. The third project is being funded by the Canadian Accessibility Standards Development Organization.
Each of these initiatives has a stakeholder committee that acts either in an advisory capacity or as a steering cvommitte. The individual initiatives are described in more detail on this site.
